The Heretic's Daughter

The Heretic's Daughter

Kathleen Kent

Kathleen Kent is a tenth generation descendent of Martha Carrier. She paints a haunting portrait, not just of Puritan New England, but also of one family's deep and abiding love in the face of fear and persecution.

The Heretic's Daughter was chosen as our Jan. read by my book club. I was amazed when I read the inside flap and noted that you had done research in Marlborough Ct. My mother is a Marlborough Chapman. Historically many members of her family lived on or near Chapman Rd. in Marlborough not far from the lake. Was Sarah Carrier really married to a Chapman or was the name chosen because of the Colchester Ct. locality?

Living in New England we have all experienced Salem, which sadly seems to focus on the entertainment aspect of the witch hunts rather than educating visitors. What a cautionary tale and so meaningful in these time we live in today.

My mother, Evelyn Harrison is also a decendent of Martha Carrier. She was 8 times removed from Martha and her mother was Anna (Carrier) Campbell. She has read your book and is very inspired to continue investigating her family heritage. She does not have internet, although has expressed great desire to visit your web site. I will be sure to take my lab top and allow her to see your site. I would love to hear from you and be able to pass this information on to my mother. Thank you for your time, Jill Sibley

Thanks for this journey into the past; its intolerance, fears, absurd pieties and hypocrisy. How sadly it represents so much of the present. Witch hunts continue.

Absolutely wonderful book ! I did a great deal of research on Danvers and the trails way back in college. One question- my research had the name of Goodman Corey as Giles not Miles- anyone know which( no pun intended) is correct ?
Martha Carrier LIVES ! God Bless Her and her decendants!

I started to read your book and I could not put it down. I remember in school learning a little bit about the Salem Witch Trials. But never have I read a story that gave such a vibrant depiction of the horrors and the suffering of innocent people, especially the women and children. As I was reading, I could see in my minds eye the vivid details come to life, I could almost smell the stench and dampness of the prison. Thank you for writing such an amazing book about a very sad chapter in American History that is not often talked about.
